The Institute is proud of its Horological Journal, which is the oldest technical journal in the world, having been published without a break since September 1858. |
 |
A copy of HJ is sent to every member each month, and contains a wealth of news and information of interest to horology enthusiasts.
We try to maintain a good balance of articles in each issue, covering clocks, watches, turret clocks and electric timepieces in articles that may be theoretical, practical or both. |
The 'Letters' pages provide a great opportunity for discussion and debate, whilst 'Branch Reports' provide updates of local activities, and regular 'Bench Views' illustrate life from the bench of a clockmaker and a watchmaker.

November 2008 Digest
Welcome to November’s Horological Journal – we hope you will find plenty of interesting articles in this month’s edition to keep you busy during the approaching long, dark Winter evenings.
Our BHI President Timothy Treffry was lucky enough to be invited to the unveiling of Dr John Taylor’s magnificent Corpus Christi clock at Cambridge University. I am sure many of you will already have seen this unusual timepiece, with it’s own ‘chronophage’, a time-eating grasshopper, in the national press or on television. Love it or hate it, it really is an inspiring piece of horology and modern art – you can make your own mind up by reading our Article of the Month.
November also sees the continuation of our series on How to Make A Congreve Clock Case by Adrian Garner, and BHI Chief Examiner David Poole once again offers encouragement to horology students with his Helping Hands series.
Steve Thackery and Anthony Gray introduce their 24 hour World Dial Clock, and Herman Horslenberger, from the Netherlands, explains how to fit new springs into antique fusees.
We also feature the latest watch news from Panerai, Henry Winston, and Jaeger leCoultre, along with a review of the new book from the National Maritime Museum, Ruth Belville – the Greenwich Time Lady, by Curator David Rooney.
As usual look out for all the HJ monthly staples – news, branch reports, letters, Horological Calendar, and Seminar page.
Happy reading!
